Insider knowledge

Booking Tips for Trelleborg

Book early

In summer (June–August) hotels fill up fast – book 4–6 weeks ahead. In autumn/winter rates drop by 30–40%.

🕒

Mind your arrival time

Ferries arrive between 6:00 and 23:00. Arriving late? A ferry cabin is often the better choice than a hotel. See cabins

🚗

Secure a parking space

Almost all hotels offer free parking. Only the Palm Tree Hotel charges for its garage.

🌎

Alternative: Malmö

35 minutes by train, hundreds of hotels. Worth it for a city visit or when Trelleborg is fully booked.

💳

Paying in Sweden

A card is all you need – Sweden is almost cashless. Credit/debit cards are accepted everywhere (SEK).

🍴

Make use of half board

Only the Home Hotel Magasinet includes dinner. Worth its weight in gold after a long ferry crossing!

Arriving in Trelleborg – What Ferry Travellers Really Need to Know

You have just arrived on the TT-Line ferry from Travemünde and are wondering: Where do I stay tonight? This section answers exactly the questions Booking.com and the like do not – because it was written by travellers who take this route regularly.

Late Arrival on the Night Ferry: What to Keep in Mind

The TT-Line night ferry from Travemünde arrives in Trelleborg between 06:00 and 07:15. That sounds early – but it is ideal for hotels: you can head straight to breakfast. The other way round: if you arrive in the evening (day ferries arrive until around 21:30), book a hotel with late check-in. The Home Hotel Magasinet and the Palm Tree Hotel have 24-hour reception. Smaller B&Bs such as Fontänens will give you a door code – call ahead!

From the Terminal to Your Hotel – Step by Step

After passport control, leave the terminal via the main exit towards town. On foot: keep left and follow Hamngatan – after 100m you reach the Home Hotel Magasinet, after 300m the Palm Tree Hotel, after 500m Stora Torget (the market square). By car: follow the “Stad / Centrum” sign, turn right at the first traffic lights. Parking is available at the hotel or free at the port (short stay). By motorhome: turn right straight onto the pitch at Dalabadets Camping – no reservation needed.

Breakfast Before the Early Ferry: Where at 5 a.m.?

If you take the 07:30 early ferry to Travemünde, you need to be at the terminal by 06:00 at the latest. A normal hotel breakfast is out. Solutions:

  • Home Hotel Magasinet: breakfast from 06:30 – tight, but doable if you are quick
  • Pressbyrån at the station: opens 06:00, coffee and sandwiches, 2 minutes from the terminal
  • Tip: buy provisions the evening before at the ICA supermarket (Algatan, 5 min from the port). Closes 21:00

Parking in Trelleborg: Free or Supervised?

Right at the ferry terminal there is free short-stay parking (max. 24h). For longer trips into Sweden without the car: long-stay parking at the station (approx. 50 SEK/day). Hotels in the centre mostly have their own parking – free at the Palm Tree Hotel, for a fee at the Magasinet. Travelling by motorhome? The pitch at Dalabadets is the cheapest (from 150 SEK/night with electricity).

The Best Strategy: Cabin or Hotel?

A common question from first-timers. The honest answer:

  • Night ferry + cabin (from €35): saves a hotel night and you arrive well rested. Ideal if you want to drive on straight away.
  • Day ferry + hotel in Trelleborg: better if you want to explore Trelleborg or arrive late in the evening. Hotels from €69.
  • Combination: outbound night ferry with cabin, return hotel + early ferry – that way you see Trelleborg at least once.

Shopping & Eating After Arrival

Supermarkets: ICA Kvantum (Algatan, 5 min on foot, until 21:00) and Coop (Hedvägen, 3 min by car). Restaurants at the port: Restaurang Tre Knöp – Swedish cuisine, 200m from the terminal. Systembolaget (the state alcohol shop): Östergatan, Mon–Fri 10–18, Sat 10–15. Supermarkets sell no alcohol other than light beer (max. 3.5%).

Where to Stay in Trelleborg – the Complete Guide

Trelleborg is Sweden’s southernmost town and one of the country’s most important ferry ports. Every year TT-Line carries hundreds of thousands of travellers across the Baltic on the Travemünde–Trelleborg route. For many, Trelleborg is the gateway to Sweden – and thus the place where the first or last night of the trip is spent.

How Trelleborg Is Laid Out

The town is compact and pedestrian-friendly. From the ferry terminal it takes 5–10 minutes on foot to reach the centre with its pedestrian zone, restaurants and supermarkets. The main railway station is right next to the port – ideal for continuing to Malmö or Copenhagen by train.

Sights within walking distance: the Viking fortress Trelleborgen, the Trelleborgs Museum, the Stadsparken and the Stora Torget. With half a day to spare, there is plenty to discover.

Which Type of Accommodation Suits You?

  • Just 1 night before/after the ferry: hotel at the port (Magasinet, Palm Tree) or motorhome pitch
  • Starting a Sweden road trip: hotel in town, then onwards towards Malmö/Ystad
  • Family holiday: beachside campsite or holiday cabin on the coast
  • Romance: boutique hotel Dannegården or coastal hotel Smygehus Havsbad
  • Budget: Fontänens B&B (from 69 €) or a holiday apartment
  • Motorhome: pitch right at the terminal (from ~10 €)

Best Time to Visit

High season June–August: highest prices, lowest availability. The shoulder months of May and September offer mild weather at noticeably lower rates. Winter (November–March): quiet, but some smaller places are closed.

💡 Tip: Cabin Instead of Hotel

With a late arrival (e.g. 21:00), a cabin on the ferry often beats a hotel. You save money and arrive in Sweden well rested.

Getting From the Terminal to Your Accommodation

The terminal is so central that most places are minutes away. On foot 5–10 minutes into the centre, by car under 10 minutes to all campsites. Details on our getting to the ferry port page.
